WHAT WE WOULD AVOID

Low prices can hide expensive compromises.

The goal is not to spend more. It is to avoid buying twice.

  • 4 GB memory: unsuitable for a new student laptop in 2026.
  • 8 GB as a four-year plan: workable for very light use, but not our recommendation when memory cannot be upgraded.
  • 128 GB storage: too restrictive. We also prefer 512 GB over 256 GB for a primary college machine.
  • A gaming laptop for basic coding: extra cost, weight, heat, and battery use without a benefit for HTML, JavaScript, Python, or standard Java classes.
  • A Chromebook without checking the course: browser-based coding can work, but local Java tools, specialty software, and some college requirements may create friction.
