THE SHORT ANSWER

Buy 16 GB for a new primary coding laptop.

Eight gigabytes is enough for browser lessons, HTML and CSS, light Python, and small projects—especially when the student closes unused applications. But a normal school day also includes many browser tabs, video calls, documents, an editor, background security tools, and sometimes an IDE or local server. That combined workload is why 16 GB is our preferred starting point.

Choose only when: the budget is strict, the work is light, and the memory can be upgraded later—or the laptop is not expected to last four years.

16 GB

Best general choice: enough room for the browser, code editor, video call, IDE, and regular coursework without constant memory management.

32 GB

Worth considering for: Android emulators, several virtual machines or containers, larger data-science work, game development, or other known course requirements.

WHAT OFFICIAL REQUIREMENTS SHOW

One lightweight editor does not represent the whole computer.

VS Code

Microsoft describes VS Code as lightweight and lists 1 GB of RAM for the editor itself. That does not include the browser, school software, local servers, extensions, or video calls.

IntelliJ IDEA

JetBrains lists 8 GB of total system memory and 3 GB available for the IDE processes. A system with exactly 8 GB therefore has little room for everything else.

Docker Desktop

Docker lists 8 GB of system RAM for its Windows setup. Containers share the computer with the code editor, browser, operating system, and development services.

Android Studio

Google lists 8 GB for Studio alone and 16 GB for Studio with the emulator; its recommended level is 32 GB. This is a materially heavier workload.

The practical conclusion: minimum requirements answer “Can this application launch?” Our recommendation answers “Can the student use the whole computer comfortably during class?”

BEFORE BUYING

Check whether the memory can ever be upgraded.

Many thin laptops have memory permanently attached to the motherboard. If an 8 GB model cannot be upgraded, saving a small amount today may shorten the useful life of the computer.

  • Soldered memory? Buy 16 GB at the beginning.
  • Open memory slot? An 8 GB model may be acceptable if a documented upgrade is inexpensive and straightforward.
  • Do not confuse RAM with storage. “16 GB / 512 GB” normally means 16 GB memory and a 512 GB SSD.
  • Avoid 4 GB. It is not a sensible specification for a new student coding laptop in 2026.
